Blinking II

I hope you can answer this question. What exactly is blinking? I think it is when the dog points the bird and then leaves it afraid of getting into trouble. A friend of mine says that there isn't even a bird there, the dog just points at nothing. I call that false pointing. I thought when the dog blinked, there was always a bird there. Who is correct. Thank you,

When a dog is blinking it usually involves avoiding a bird and it may also include avoiding the scent of a bird. I have even seen some dogs blink a pheasant track. False pointing is something entirely different than blinking. That involves a dogs with a strong pointing instinct and will sometimes point light scent. Some dogs do this too many times and this usually means that they have a low quality of nose use. They are unable to tell the difference between when a bird is there or not.
