Vizslas with Kids

Postby Emmadirl1 » Thu Jan 07, 2021 3:57 pm

Hello,

Considering a Vizsla as my next dog. Never had a pointer, always had labs, looking for a versatile breed. How do they do with very young children? I assume hyper as puppies but do they mellow out in the house as after a few years? Any help or thoughts would be greatly appreciated

I do not have V's myself but know several folks who do, and who keep them indoors with their families. My sense of it is that they do make good housedogs and coexist well with family. The V's I have known are very much dialed in to one person and tend to be quite responsive to that person.

Sooo, if that one person is YOU, it is up to you to make sure that the dog understands its place in the family pecking order and understands how it must behave around your children. I suspect you will do just fine.

Yes they tend to be fairly energetic dogs, but any pointing dog worth its kibble will be pretty energetic. With some age on them, the pointing dogs I am familiar with tend to settle down and settle in, especially when they are in a family or home setting. Aside from being principally a one person type dog, the V's I have known have been generally very well balanced mentally.

Probably the breed which seems(to me) to be the easiest to have in the home are Setters, but I have seen competitive field trial dogs(who are about as high energy as it gets) adapt beautifully to a household environment. I kinda think those dogs figured out that they grabbed the brass ring AND hit the lottery all at once and are not about to mess up a good thing.

They make great housedogs if they're exercised. Probably more high-strung than labs but if the kids are kindergarten age or bigger (IE, can watch out and tell the dog to knoick it off) they're fine.

Coming in late, but just about any dog of any breed can be a good house dog. It takes some training and if it is a high energy dog, a lot of exercise to burn off energy, and perhaps a job.

The Vizslas I've known have all been nice dogs. Lots of energy, but kind-hearted. Not that I've know very many Vizslas; they aren't all that common.

The Vizsla's I've been around are great family dogs. They are sensitive dogs and aloof with strangers. They do tend to key on one person of the family. They are very energetic but in the house in their place they are very calm and obedient(if you make them that way). I am giving Wirehair Vizsla's very much consideration for my next dog but I hopefully have a ways to go before then. The wirehairs appear to me to be a tad bit mellower and less aloof and nothing is better looking than a bearded dog but it is all in the breeding with these VHD's.
You never have to tell a dog what time to be home, give them the keys, and they never ask for money.
